Extension of Funchal Airport
The Jury's choice for the Secil Civil Engineering Award 2001 was the Expansion of the Funchal Airport runway, designed by the engineer António Segadães Tavares, a selection made from a batch of several projects of great merit nominated by the Jury, which was presided by engineer António Reis.
In the words of the President of the Jury, "The singularity of the work for the Extension of the Funchal Airport runway undoubtedly weighed heavily in the Jury's final decision. A project design made under particularly complex conditions. The on-site implementation of the studied solutions required from the Project Author, as well as from the other participants, a high technical capacity for solving specific problems".

In order to provide the runway at Funchal Airport with the characteristics that would make it operational for the largest commercial aircraft in service, it was decided to extend it with a bridge designed to withstand an unusual request - the unloading in the operation of an aircraft of the type "Boeing 747-400".
Some of the quantities used in the runway extension:
- Excavations - 3 500 000 cubic metres
- Landfills - 3 400 000 cubic metres
- Piles - (1500 mm diameter) 23 000 metres
- Piles - (diameter 1200 mm) 3 000 metres
- Structural Concrete - (C30/35) 340 000 cubic metres
- Steel for reinforcement - (fsy = 400 Mpa) 32 000 tonnes
- Steel for prestressing - (tons) 16 000 tons
- Steel for prestressing - (strength) 850 000 000 kNxm
