More about the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Plant

The Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Project was developed by a multidisciplinary engineering team from EDP Produção, coordinated by Eng. Domingos Silva Matos. The project was unanimously distinguished by the Secil Award Jury, chaired by Eng. António Campos Matos.

Secil established the Secil Award in 1992, which is now recognised as the most important award in Civil Engineering in Portugal. It aims to encourage and promote the public recognition of the authors of solutions that have been applied in construction and constitute significant pieces in the enrichment of civil engineering and also acknowledges the use of cement, a material whose production is Secil's primary vocation.

The Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Plant, which is located in the municipality of Torre de Moncorvo and also covers the municipalities of Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros, has an installed capacity of 189 MW, and comprises two levels, Baixo Sabor upstream and Feiticeiro downstream. With a height of 123 metres (the second-highest in Portugal), the upstream dam has a reservoir with a capacity of 1 095 hm3, which is also the second-largest in the country.

The project owner is EDP Produção, the construction was carried out by Baixo Sabor ACE, formed by the companies Odbrecht - Bento Pedroso Construções, SA and Lena Construções, SA, and the works were supervised by Consulgal - Consultores de Engenharia, SA.
