About Duarte Pacheco Viaduct

Duarte Pacheco Viaduct was designed in 1937 by engineer João Alberto Barbosa Carmona and was inaugurated on May 28, 1944.

It is named after the Public Works Minister, Duarte Pacheco, a major driving force behind the modernisation of the Portuguese road network in the 1940s, whose statue stands on the north side of the viaduct.

At the time, it was one of the largest viaducts in Europe, 471 metres long, 24 metres wide and with a maximum height of 27 metres. Today, it remains a landmark construction site with a high daily turnout.
