Looking toward the future of construction

Cement, more specifically concrete, is one of the most essential products in our society. Its unique properties make it the building material of choice, becoming the most consumed on the planet.

Bearing in mind the massive use of this and other products which are the core of Secil Group's business, we have been working to promote new solutions to contribute to more efficient and sustainable construction.

One example is the recycling of demolition waste from buildings and infrastructures. This is a way of reducing the use of new aggregates, lowering the environmental costs arising from exploration, transport, and the amount of waste to be landfilled.

We are also working on the development of products which include a commitment to the circular economy, where we take advantage of by-products from other industries, such as cork, to manufacture, for example, mortars and lightweight concrete with cork.

Secil has also invested in a range of other coating and thermal insulation products which improve the energy efficiency of buildings.

Contributing to the CO₂ reduction

We are working to respond to the European Ecological Pact by gradually integrating the circular economy into our processes. In this sense, we have started two innovation projects that aim to minimise the impact of our products: the Low Carbon Clinker and the Clean Cement Line.

Sustainable products

Investing in the circular economy, Secil uses by-products from other industries, such as cork, to manufacture mortars and lightweight concrete with cork, among others.

ECOCORK LIME is thermal insulation plaster made exclusively from natural hydraulic lime (a binder with CO₂ absorption capacity during the drying process) and light, natural and renewable aggregates in the form of granulated expanded cork. Natural Hydraulic Lime combined with cork is synonymous with high environmental performance and improved thermal and acoustic performance of the building.

Lightweight architectural concrete with cork aggregates is a structural concrete where granules of naturally expanded cork are incorporated and manufactured with white cement for application on the exterior façades of buildings. It has improved thermal/acoustic characteristics. The use of granules that come from recycled cork makes this concrete an ecological and fully recyclable material, contributing to the sustainability of construction.
Innovate through partnerships

In a partnership with NAUE secugrid®, Sibline has created a more sustainable solution for soil stabilisation in an 8-metre-deep excavation, as an alternative to the traditional reinforced concrete system. The combination of Sibline concrete blocks and NAUE secugrid® containment grids created an effective barrier eight metres high and 30 metres long in an excavation in Lebanon.

This engineering project included a chimney drainage system to overcome any hydrostatic pressure applied to the barrier, and a filling of the hollow part of the concrete blocks with gravel to ensure drainage. Approximately 3000 concrete block units with 2300 m3 of secugrid® were used for this project.

Operational Excellence

Secil Way Programme is a project for the implementation of the operational model of the Secil Group's cement factories, which covers all geographies, and aims to achieve the best operational performance sustainably.

Secil Way aims to generate a high organizational capacity of the factory to sustain high performance at the lowest possible cost; guarantee excellent safety performance and ensure high product uniformity.

"Secil Way has brought us a focused strengthening on meeting performance indicators, a greater and better alignment of the teams and an improvement in communication and information sharing within the team and between the various areas.”
