Secil launches the first carbon neutral concrete in Portugal

Published by: ECO newspaper

Secil has just launched the Verdi Zero concrete, the first concrete with zero CO₂ emissions in Portugal, an innovative and sustainable product that meets the goal of achieving carbon neutrality in the cement industry by 2050 and the necessary decarbonisation of the construction sector.

“By launching the Verdi Zero concrete, Secil takes a step forward in building a more sustainable future, with fewer carbon buildings and infrastructures and reduced impact on the environment", states Otmar Hübscher, CEO do Grupo Secil, adding that “the Company follows the guidelines established in the cement industry and commits to reducing the CO2 emissions associated with the chain value, developing a set of projects focused on product, operation and transportation”.

The Verdi Zero concrete has lower carbon intensity and promotes the circular economy by using recycled waste, which implies less use of virgin raw material. The remaining emissions will be offset through a carbon offset programme certified by Climate Impact Partners and Verdi Zero has been awarded as CarbonNeutral® Product.

Strengthening its commitment to fighting climate change, the Secil Group joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), defining internal goals to reduce near-term emissions (2030) based on scientific data and verification, by this international organisation, of compliance with the decarbonisation objectives.

The Protection of the Planet and the People, along with the respect for the environment and responsible citizenship, are the strategic foundations of Secil Group. The Company creates sustainable value, investing in technological innovation, promoting new solutions that contribute to a more efficient construction and developing the circular economy. Another goal of the Company is to promote the vitality and balance of the ecosystems, as well as landscape recovery, protecting biodiversity.
