More on the Rehabilitation of Francisco de Arruda Primary School

"If you don't have a village, my son, you must go in search of it! A boy cannot live without having his village". This quote by João dos Santos served as a major incentive for the project. The existing buildings were recovered and are now taken as if they had been built in different times, making a bit of a city. The project serenely continues this process.

The central courtyard design is completed with a body offering an extensive gallery for gathering and staying as the new entrance to the school and containing, on the ground floor, the library and, on the upper floor, the laboratories. The school changing rooms are built under the former caravels' courtyard.

The original central atrium, never used, is now the lobby of a small main hall designed as a garden pavilion.

In the outdoor spaces, the vegetation of the Tapada is emphasised through new planting to highlight the sense of public garden of the complex.

The restoration and modernisation work on the Francisco de Arruda Primary School (the original work of the architect António Pedroso, 1953), carried out by Parque Escolar, was undertaken by the consortium Aníbal de Oliveira Cristina, Lda / Martifer - Construções Metalomecânicas, S.A.
