The Order of Architects and SECIL awarded the Secil Architecture Prize 2006, by unanimous decision of the Jury, to the Ribera Serrallo Sports Complex in Cornella de Llobregat (Barcelona), designed by the architect Álvaro Siza.

The work, commissioned by the Municipality of Cornella de Llobregat, consists of a multi-purpose facility with capacity for 2,500 people, two swimming pools – indoors and outdoors – and a gym and common services area. It was built between 2003 and the end of 2005.

The Secil Architecture Award 2006 will be presented by the President of the Republic on 30 March at 19:00, at a ceremony held at the Prof. Simões dos Santos Auditorium, at the Cidade Universitária, Lisbon.

Álvaro Joaquim de Melo Siza Vieira was born in Matosinhos in 1933. He studied Architecture at the Graduate School of Fine Arts in Porto between 1949 and 1955 and his first work was built in 1954.

He taught at ESBAP between 1966 and 1969 and joined the institution in 1976 as Assistant Professor of “Construction”.

He was Visiting Lecturer at the Polytechnic School of Lausanne, the University of Pennsylvania, at the Los Andes School, Bogota, Graduate School of Design of Harvard University as “Kenzo Tange Visiting Lecturer”; he taught at the Architecture Faculty of Porto.

He works as an architect in the city of Porto. He is a member of the American Institute of Arts and Science and “Honorary Fellow” of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
